What is a sensor?

Still, the most understandable way for everyone to actually get it is if we say that a sensor is a device that puts out a signal with the intention of detecting some kind of change in the environment. When it gets a piece of information, it is obligated to send that information to another device. 

After the information has been sent out and received by the other device, that same device is responsible for acting out as a result of it.

Types of sensors

Even though a sensor can do many things that we are unaware of, we need to focus on the types of sensors there are. No one wants to get a device that is supposed to do something else than we have imagined. 

Each type is used for different things such as determining temperature, distance, resistance, etc… Many of them can detect what kind of pressure an object is making or what its weight is. 

Others can capture sound waves and where they come from. Some sensors can detect where an object is and how far it is from the sensor’s location. 

Whatever you may have in your mind, someone has already made a sensor for it. That is why they are so practical to use.

Now in this article, we are going to focus a bit more on ranging sensors and what they do.

What are ranging sensors?

When we are talking about ranging or range sensors, we are talking about a device that is able to capture or detect a 3D picture of anything that comes in front of it. They can detect the distance that it is between them and the object they are looking at. 

This is why they are commonly used in robot navigation. Terrain or fieldwork is nothing new or complicated to them. They are used in robots that can endure any type of obstacle or condition. 

No matter what kind of measurement you might need from it, they can get it. Even if it is a minor point or a full 3D image of an object, they can do it. 

A very common method that is used for this type of work has been named Lidar. This kind of method uses a laser to detect an object. The way it does it, it targets the specific object with the laser, and the time it will need for it to return back to the receiver shows the distance between them.
