Starting up an After School Kids Club

If you are thinking about starting up an after school club, then the children are going to be thrilled! There is a lot to consider here, and you might wonder where on earth you begin with such a task, which makes complete sense.

This piece is here to offer you some guidance on what you need to do to start up your own after school kids club and what it might involve.

What Will Be Your Subject?

If you have already had an idea about creating your own after school kids club, then there is a good chance that you already have an idea in mind that you would like to teach or guide with. However, if you haven’t, and you just know that you want to be able to give children something else to do after school, or maybe help working parents who cannot get there until after 5 pm, then it is worth having a good think about what you want your subject to be.

Some questions to ask yourself can include what types of hobbies are already available? Are there any in particular that the children at school feel like they are missing or want to get involved in? Is there anything you have experience in or are qualified to teach? These questions can help you determine the ideal subject for your after school club. However, remember to keep it simple!

Find the Space

Ideally, you will be able to do the after school club at the school, but this is not always possible for a variety of reasons. If you cannot run the club at the school, then the next step is to take a look at any potential locations. You might want to liaise with the children’s parents to make sure that the location you are thinking of will be easily accessible. If the children cannot get there, there will not be a club!

You will also want to consider how much space you will need, how many children will potentially attend, and if you need to be loud or particularly messy!

What Items Will You Need?

As you are running an after school club, it might be an idea to see if you can get any donations to fund the club. Look through thrift stores or go on Freecycle to get hold of furniture and other items you might need to keep costs low. There may be things that you have to splash out on. Some great items for after school kid’s clubs are games they can do together, such as air hockey or table football. While these can be expensive when bought new, they can definitely be treated as a worthwhile investment. Just make sure to do your research so you get the best out there! No matter what you buy for the club or what the activities are, just be sure to make it consistent so that the children have something fun they can always rely on.
